I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
John 17:33
While I was living in Providence Place, a nursing home, I had an interesting experience. One of the nurse’s aides brought in her bread machine and made bread for all of us for a treat. While eating the bread, I started to choke. I couldn’t make any sound, so I knew I needed help. I went to a nurse and held my hand under my chin as I’ve always seen to tell someone you are choking. I couldn’t speak so she figured out what was happening. She had me lie on the floor in an area next to some people sitting. Someone held my hand very tightly. I was surprised by how absolutely calm I felt. But I knew God was with me. Little by little I found I couldn’t hold on tightly anymore and my hand slipped onto the floor. I felt like I was on a magic carpet ride. I couldn’t see anything, but it was exhilarating. I never saw a light as some people say they do if they’re dying. Suddenly, I felt like I had been kicked hard and I woke up. There were ambulance EMT’s and then I was loaded into the ambulance and taken to Regions Hospital. Someone must have performed the Heimlich maneuver. God definitely sent a life raft!
The next week, I was at Regions Hospital for a visit with my ENT doctor. He asked me if one of his residents could come in. He said he had been working in the ER when they brought me in, and he said they certainly brought me back to life. I said of course I would talk to him. When he came into the room, he was just curious how I was doing. I told him fine, but thanks for any help I received. The Lord was watching over me!
