What If
"Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice!
O let your ears be attentive
to the sound of my pleadings."
Psalms 130:1-2
What if there was no Coronavirus? What if George Floyd hadn’t been arrested and died? And then there were more deaths…and more deaths due to the coronavirus and racism. Our world would be a vastly different place. I haven’t written for so long because I have been confused, depressed and, I might as well get it out there, wondering why God hasn’t swept in and fixed all these horrible realities. Yes, I admit it. I want our God to be Superman. I’m stuck in my six-year-old mindset where this God who loves me so much should be making these things right. He should be correcting the wrongs we as human beings have created such as systemic racism and the pain it causes. He should be taking away our pain and suffering by removing the Coronavirus from earth. But I pray…and I pray…and nothing happens. There are more deaths.
We know that God created man and put him on this earth and then MAN screwed up. Man disobeyed the one rule God gave him and that brought about death. And now we can see where that has taken us by looking at the pandemic. The pandemic has resulted in thousands of deaths. Worse yet, it has resulted in thousands of people suffering and dying alone unless they know Jesus. Because there is no vaccine and no cure, people are not allowed to visit their loved ones who are hospitalized or in nursing homes with and even without the COVID-19 virus. I can’t even bring someone into a doctor or dentist appointment with me because of the pandemic. Everyone is afraid of getting the virus.
Why are we afraid? We, of all people, should know and trust that our Lord still loves us and will take care of us. And if we die, we will be with Him in a place where there are no more tears. He told us that “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Rev 7:17 But we are human beings, and we are prone to worrying, however sinful it is. God told us to give our worries to Him, but we have to remember daily to do that. There is a prayer I say daily to help me remember:
“Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me
and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalms 139:23-24
So, what should we do today and tomorrow and the day after? We must keep praying faithfully and we must believe that God is still there loving us. And that He will help us in His own way and at His own time. In the meantime, I ask Him daily to be close to those of us who are suffering and dying in nursing homes and hospitals alone since their loved ones cannot visit due to the Coronavirus threat. I ask Him to embrace them, covering them with His loving-kindness and letting them know they are not suffering and/or dying alone. He is with them.
And as for the racism we know many people still hold in their hearts, we again must pray faithfully that God will help them see that we are all just people whether we are white, black, brown or yellow. We know racism springs from fear that something (or someone) is different from us and, for some reason, that poses a threat to us. We have to put that person down so they are not able to hurt us. But we need to learn that those “other” people don’t want to hurt us. They are just like us. All they want to do are the same things we do every day. And they’d even like to be our friend if we’re neighbors or we work together. Whole populations of people have been almost wiped out by leaders, such as Hitler, who hated a different race so much he did not think they should even exist. We need to pray diligently for those people who don’t see all the human race as one regardless of skin color.
So, whatever you do, don’t give up on our good and gracious God who loves us more than anything. I know it’s sometimes hard right now to trust and believe that, but it is true. And someday we may even know why God allowed this plague to take so many of us. Right now, we are not capable of understanding all of His plans. But know that He has plans and He has reasons, and He is there watching over everything that is happening. He has not forgotten us. Scripture told us He can no more forget about us than a mother nursing her baby could forget about her baby.
Take care, do not be afraid, and love everyone you meet. God bless you today and every day. I will try to write again soon.
